Installing and Using the UT3 Protocol Utility

Thanks to {GGM}Radon for creating this for the UT3 Community

This tool adds the missing protocol function of Unreal Tournament 3. When websites linked to ut2004://ip.address.here:port, UT2004 was launched and connected immediately to the server that was specified in the IP address of the URL. This tool adds this ability to your installation of UT3.

Installation:

Locate your UT3.exe file in the Binaries folder where you installed Unreal Tournament 3.
WinXP default location: C:\Program Files\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries
Vista default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries

Open the .ZIP file you downloaded and extract the UT3Protocol.exe file into this folder.

Double click on it to install it. In the window that comes up, click on "CREATE REGISTRY FIX." Once you have done this there is no need to access UT3Protocol.exe again. You do not need a shortcut to it. However, do not delete it.

Windows Vista requires that you have Administrator rights to successfully run the installation — Locate the UT3Protocol.exe file in the Binaries folder (where you extracted it), right-click on it and select "Start as administrator.")

Usage:

Once you have installed the UT3 Protocol utility, Windows will recognize the prefix "ut3://" as a legitimate URL that points to a Unreal Tournament 3 server in the same way that it recognizes the prefix "http://" as a URL that points to a web page or other file on a website.

The generic format for a ut3:// URL is:

ut3://‹IP›[:‹port›][?password=‹serverpassword›]

Angle brackets, ‹ ›, indicate you are to substitute your value for the parameter. (do not include the brackets)

Square brackets, [ ], indicate the parameter is optional and need not be used. (do not include the brackets)

Examples:  ut3://8.3.7.55
 ut3://8.3.7.55:7777
 ut3://8.3.7.55:7777?password=pw4server
ut3://‹IP› — IP only — optional port and password not used
ut3://‹IP›:‹port› — IP and port — optional password not used
 ut3://‹IP›:‹port›?password=‹serverpassword› — IP, port, & password
Usage Examples:

You can use a ut3:// URL anywhere you can use an http:// URL...

screenshots are from Windows XP Home
In the address box of your browser:
(type the URL and press the Enter key to immediately join the server)

In the address box of Windows Explorer:
(type the URL and press the Enter key to immediately join the server)

Create a shortcut to a server:
(Use the right-click|create shortcut menu, enter the URL, click Next, give the shortcut a name, and click OK.)

in the Start|Run window:
(Enter the URL and click OK; you will join the server immediately.)

in IRC:
(type the URL so others with the UT3 Protocol utility can double-click on it to join the server or if someone has typed it for you, double-click on it yourself to join the server.)
Notes:

The UT3 Protocol utility works best if you have UT3 configured to save your password and to automatically log you in.

When you join a server using a ut3:// URL the UT3 Protocol utility splash-screen pops up for a second or two, then goes away. UT3 then starts to run with the usual delays while it loads and initializes itself. The UT3 splash screen comes up, then it appears to be connecting to the server; this is interrupted to show you that you are being logged in. Once you are logged in, the connection to the server completes.

If you do not have UT3 configured to save your password or to automatically log in, the attempt to connect to the server will be interrupted so you can enter your password (if needed) and/or so you can click the Log-in button. Once you have done this, the connection to the server will complete.

If you already have the UT3 Protocol utilitiy installed, you can click on the ut3:// URL below to join the DvT UT3 server:

ut3://8.3.7.55:7777
